Sunday Night Scripture: Proverbs 14:35

Tonight is going to be a small post as I keep preparing for two solid weeks of video blogs.

One thing I love about the proverbs is that so many of them have so many levels.

Take for example, Proverbs 14:35….

A servant who deals wisely has the king’s favor, but his wrath falls on one who acts shamefully. (ESV)

The first level is to take it literally…a servant to a king.

And we are servants…of our King…Christ.

Because of that, we’re to serve everyone. And if we did a better job serving those around us…perhaps Christians would be seen with more favor in society. (Yes, we’ll always have those who despise us because they despise Christ…but we as Christians bring a lot of it on ourselves.)

Do you serve others? REALLY serve others?

Is it satan….or God?

In America we have a tendency to attribute any bad situation to satan.

I’m not going to deny satan is out to destroy and kill.

But I’m wondering if we give the old slimeball too much credit.

God is in control of all things, right?

So when we face difficult situations in our life and we immediately think that it’s the enemy trying to attack us we almost dismiss the possibility that God is disciplining us.

And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. (Hebrews 12:5-8 ESV)

Do you immediately think when something bad happens it’s satan?

False teachers and sorrow

God really moved me in my Bible in a Year reading.

I was reading in 1 Samuel about Israel’s rejection of God’s truth and accepting the twisted logic of the world that having a human king was better than having God be the King of Israel. The anguish and sorrow that Samuel felt at the nation turning their back on God and advocating a false teaching.

And God opened my eyes to the sorrow.

You see, in the past when I would see someone who was engaging in a false teaching, I would get angry. I would see them distorting the Scriptures to approve of sinful behavior either by themselves or by others. Making excuse after excuse about why a Christian should ignore some Scripture to get along with the world. I would be angry over the attempts to lead people astray and I would be mad at the person for their complete devotion to distortion.

But I realize the anger against the people was misplaced.

I should be filled with sorrow for them.

I should be filled with sorrow that they’re so deceived they can’t see God’s truth.

I should be filled with sorrow they’ve rejected Christ by denying His teachings.

I should be filled with sorrow they desire to lead others away from God.

I need to be praying for them to turn their lives in a way that lines up with God. Anger toward them does no good. If anything, it can drive them away. Be firm in holding to truth but do not be angry at them for their being decieved.

Feel sorrow.

Pray hard.

Watch for God to redeem.

If you don’t follow Christ at the ballot box, you don’t follow Christ

I don’t want to dive into politics much on this blog because quite frankly the whole political process disgusts me. I’m tired of the continual bickering, insults, distortions and outright lies that seem to be the hallmark of the American political system today.

But when it comes to a Christian involving themselves in politics or voting, it’s really not a hard process.

Your not wanting to “impose your will” on others is irrelevant.

Your not wanting America to be a “theocracy” is irrelevant.

Your not wanting Christians to be seen as “intolerant” is irrelevant.

Your belief government is secular and so you have to vote with that in mind is irrelevant.

Your political party, your social platform, your activist group involvement is all irrelevant.

There is only one thing that matters when you go into the voting box.

How God feels regarding the item upon which you’re voting.

If you go into the voting booth and think “well, I know this goes against God’s Word, but I’m going to vote for it anyway because (insert excuse here)” then you’re willingly flaunting the Word of God.

As with anything in our life, your choice comes down to you and God.

Do you choose the world’s way to do things…

…Or do you choose God’s?
